Annual and pre-employment health checkups: what they protect you from

Last updated 16 September 2026

Key takeaway

Annual checkups catch disease early; pre-employment checkups tell you whether a candidate is fit for the actual job. Here is how to run both well.

Annual and pre-employment health checkups: what they protect you from

Two checkups do two very different jobs, and employers often confuse them. The annual health checkup protects an existing employee by finding disease early. The pre-employment health checkup protects both sides at hiring by confirming that a candidate is medically fit for the specific hazards of the role they are joining.

Annual checkups matter because early-stage diabetes, hypertension, anaemia, thyroid disorders and lipid abnormalities have no symptoms. When they are found at a checkup, treatment is simple and cheap. When they surface on their own, they surface as a hospital admission, a long absence and an insurance claim — all of which land on the employer.

Good annual programmes are also targeted. A 26-year-old desk employee and a 52-year-old shift worker in a chemical plant should not receive the same panel. Age, gender, job profile and hazard exposure should decide which tests are added, and statutory requirements decide the rest.

Pre-employment checkups answer a narrower question: can this person safely do this job? A driver needs vision, colour vision and cardiac screening. A food handler needs infectious-disease clearance. A height or confined-space worker needs vertigo, hearing and respiratory assessment. A generic 'basic panel' tells you almost nothing about fitness for these roles, which is how avoidable incidents and disputed claims begin.

Done properly, a pre-employment report should end in a clear call — fit, fit with conditions, temporarily unfit, or refer for specialist review — with the restrictions and retest timelines written down. That gives HR a defensible hiring decision instead of an opinion.

On corporatehealth.in both flows run in one place. For annual checkups you can pick packages by industry, hazard and demographic, run them onsite as a camp or at partner labs, and have digital reports land back in each employee's own record. For pre-employment, HR adds the candidate and role, picks a role-specific package, finds nearby diagnostic centres by PIN code, books a slot, uploads the report, and receives a role-based fitness opinion with a downloadable PDF and a place to record the final hiring decision.

Because both feed the same platform, results are not stranded in a PDF folder. Abnormal findings connect to consultations, diet plans and re-tests, and your compliance records stay audit-ready in one export.
